The root cause
Long, long ago, humans cared a lot for the beauty, and there was enough time to add all the details. An artisan would spend hours together to make a product (a chair, a pot, a shoe, a fishing stick, a dress, a mirror πͺ, an umbrella, etc, etc). His work was not driven by commerce. Most artisans were already living a self-sustainable life, and they were creating things for their satisfaction and for their inner wellbeing. Such items couldn’t be mass-produced. It takes great detail of handwork.
And the people who place the order know what the amount of work goes into making it, and carry reverence for it. Point to notice here is that everyone was an artisan in one way or another.
Once purchased, it’s for the lifetime. I remember my grandfather’s chair, made of bamboo, was used by him all his life. And just a week before he departed from earth, he had donated most of his items to different people and institutions, which are still in use.

For most items, it was not like you just go and buy. You have to place an order and wait for months. Such a wait and anticipation were health-giving. There is not much scope for instant gratification to move to another immediately, and throw away culture was not heard of.
Such artisans’ children grow up learning the skill from early childhood, and hence in India, we had something called Swadharma(I am sure similar things existed in different cultures and geography). A soul chooses such a family to be born in so that, through genetics, it can inherit the skill in its body memory. This is the reason why a son of a potter can easily excel working with clay. The son of the carpenter already has the skill in his body memory. Children who choose to be musicians are born in such a family to learn Sangeetha just by being in such an environment.
If you notice the temples in India carry a great detail of art and craftsmanship, but we don’t know who did it. It took generations to complete the ancient temples, and yet we don’t know who sculpted a particular statue. Very few are known. Can you imagine the inner experience they had to spend their entire life on this beauty? Soundarya in Kannada or Sanskrit is more appropriate than the English word beauty.
The sense of beauty is deeply rooted in our culture and even in our daily life. It’s just wonderful to watch the rangoli (Kolam) in front of the home(which is extinct now in the apartment culture). It’s a reflection of the inner beauty of the lady of the house. Days used to start with beauty. Remember the amount of time the whole family spend in decorating the home with natural materials (the mango leaves, neem tree leaves, flowers) for a festival.
Let me share one practical example: In most villages in India, long back (just 70 to 200 years back), if a cattle dies(not slaughtered ), then the village would call people of a particular tribe. They would carry the body and the flesh was consumed by their whole clan with reverence, skin was processed and made leather articles such as musical instruments like tabala, drums(these days plastic is used), leather slippers, horn were turned into hair comb, buttons for shirt and other articles, bones were used to make many other articles and so on.
Important note: In those days, people ate what was sustainably available. It was a need but not greed. Please don’t pass judgment just because you feel, in current times, that vegetarians are projected as pure and non-vegetarians are impure.
For me, those who live sustainably are the purest, and those who live unsustainably are not just impure, but I consider them criminals
It was the most sustainable model. Today to mass produce the cattle are being slaughtered on a large scale without any compassion.
What changed!?
Industrialization!!. Industrialisation gave birth to mass production without a sense of beauty. Products become just utilities, and there is no emotional attachment to them. Production was more than what was needed. People started consuming without any reverence and absolutely no emotional attachment to it. The same started reflecting in relationships as well. The popular phrase “Use and throw” has become prevalent.
Few people whose IQ is better than others who are also greedy could exploit other fellow humans to accumulate wealth. The unfair wealth distribution came into existence because people started working for the accumulation of money instead of working for their inner selves. They went further to advertise and convince the people to ignore the local artisans and buy ready-made products, which are available for instant purchase.
The money is getting into the head
This is a flawed program because we all know that with all the live examples in history that those who live their life only for making money can never live a peaceful life. In fact, it does the opposite. I have seen people who have earned money, and it got into their heads, and they have a hard time seeing the ground. The ground is simply not visible to them. In our own community, I have seen the attitude of the people whose only contribution is money and have no value for the contribution made otherwise. The head started speaking instead of the heart.
Anyways, from industrialisation we entered the information age. Just 300 years ago, children were not disturbed during their bodily development period, but now parents and capitalists are not leaving even the unborn baby alone. I saw an ad which is selling something to pregnant mothers, saying that a child can start learning in its womb itself. You all might have seen those ads where small children were targeted to learn computer programming.
They create a fear that if at this age a child does not know these many letters or numbers, then the child is useless π.
Parents want their children to achieve the greatest at the cost of the children’s inner well-being.
After exposing the children to all the pollution, toxic food, toxic education, and toxic peers, they wonder π€ why my child is having so many issues.
I want to bring to your awareness that today, 1 out of 33 children born in the USA and 1 out of 100 children born in India are on the autism spectrum. This is very alarming.
A solution, not the solution:
Paripoornam ππͺ·βοΈ is a humble effort to create an alternative world where
- Beauty is respected
- Slow-paced life is appreciated
- Children are allowed to express fearlessly, and let them bloom to their full potential without comparison
- Stand for the right and live rightly, even if millions are mindlessly following the disastrous path
- Eat real food and breathe pure air.
I’m not saying that we have a solution, but we are making an effort. We invite you to become part of the solution with equal ownership.
